Each chapter presents a quantitative analysis and interpretation of given forests based on massive data, and provides essential perspectives on recent important findings. Topics include the evergreen broad-leaved forest, the evergreen sclerophyllous Quercus forest, the warm temperate coniferous forest, the man-made forest, the semi-savanna in hot-dry valleys, and Tertiary relict forests. Special attention is given to living fossil plants and their invaluable forests. Patterns and processes of the subtropical vegetation are thoroughly analyzed. The themes of secondary succession, disturbance, competition, and adaptation to environment are all developed, with many implications for our understanding of the persistence of southwestern China s most important subtropical forests, plant communities and tree species, and with special emphasis on the maintenance of plant diversity.
