In "The Hispano Homeland", Richard L. Nostrand examines historical, geographical, and census documents and oral information to interpret the authentic Spanish-American subculture surviving in northern New Mexico and southern Colorado. There the descendants of sixteenth-century Spanish settlers exhibit clear cultural differences from other Spanish-speaking people of the Borderlands. Their interaction with Pueblo Indians, nomad Indians, Anglos, and Mexican Americans, combined with isolation in their particular natural and cultural environment, has given them a unique sense of place -- a sense of homeland -- that Nostrand traces from its beginnings to the present. Nowhere in America, Nostrand finds, has so large an area been so purely ethnic so recently. "Nostrand has made a straightforward, thorough, and valuable study in his effort 'to interpret the Hispanos' experience geographically, ' one accessible to the educated public as well as to scholars....Like the Homeland itself, this book should endure as a fundamental contribution to regional and historical geography". -- Annals of the Association of American Geographers. "Excellent maps, informative tables, and well-argued prose highlight this outstanding contribution to historical geography". -- Choice. "A remarkable achievement.... The Hispano Homeland is a meticulous, carefully crafted piece of research supported by finely executed maps and instructive archival photos". -- Professional Geographer.
