In the field of Applied Linguistics, there are lively andcritical discussions about the impact of the spread of English inthe world. It is not clear, however, to what extent thesediscussions are being taken up by native English speakers who arehired to teach English as a Foreign Language primarily on the basisof their native speakership. This M.A. thesis study addresses thisgap. The context for the study is the Japan Exchange and Teaching(JET) Programme. Participants are former Assistant LanguageTeachers (ALTs) from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UnitedKingdom, and the United States. Results show that participantsdemonstrate little awareness of the macro level criticaldiscussions. This has implications for language ideologies, teacherpractices, and the broader socio-political goals of the JETProgramme. Implications range beyond the context of the JETProgramme, however, and into other foreign language contexts, wherethe practice of hiring untrained native speakers of English asteachers is commonplace and generally left unchallenged.
