This book provides an overview of racism in the United States by examining the institutional and social scaffolding that continues to sustain it. It discusses the four major racial groups--First Nation, Africans, Mexicans, and Chinese--who were historically targets of legalized racial discrimination during the formation and expansion of the United States. This book also highlights contemporary examples of racism in social, economic, and institutional settings, and how contemporary immigrants are affected by the history of the racial groups who came before them. The chapters in this volume also offer up social justice interventions that can be implemented to dismantle the scaffolding that holds discrimination in place.
