Excerpt from Newton Forster, or the Merchant Service The fact is, perhaps, that the author is at the stage in which he thinks he has a mission to fulfil. His head is full of certain topics on which he believes that the ordinary public opinion is wrong. Thus he introduces a long account of some of the happier conditions of slavery in the West Indies, in Chapters xiv. And xv. He discusses duelling in Chapter xxxv.; he interposes a few remarks on the real value of Madeira as compared with sherry; above all, he is wroth with those merchants who obtained possession of India and called themselves the East India Company. All the earlier paragraphs in Chapter xl. Are occupied with a denunciation of old John Company, conceived and written in much the same spirit as that in which some of the more fijrious of its critics at present denounce the Chartered Company in South Africa.
