This book, based on the FP7 project ICSI (Intelligent Cooperative Sensing for Improved traffic efficiency), presents up-to-date and beyond state of the art work on the most challenging and demanding research issues related to intelligent transportation systems (ITS). The goal is to define a new architecture in order to permit cooperative sensing in ITS and to develop a reference end-to-end implementation. The project results enable the formulation of advanced traffic and travel management strategies on the basis of reliable and real-time input data. The effectiveness of such new strategies, together with the proposed system, is assessed in two field trials. The book is divided into four main sections that address scheduling and real-time communication, fault tolerance, security and services, and simulations and testbeds for ITS. These sections detail new research findings, algorithms, protocols, and implementation platform development for ITS which merges and integrates heterogeneous data sources into a common system. In addition, they provide a set of advanced tools for control, monitoring, simulation, and prediction of traffic that will result in safer, more sustainable, and less congested roads.
