Digital humans have recently had a great impact on the fieldof ergonomics. An increasing number of organizations are now usingdigital humans in the design and testing of complex systems.Instead of classical prototyping approaches used for testing andevaluation of new designs, these organizations are relying onsimulations in virtual environments to get feedback about theirdesigns. Since a primary goal of using digital humans is to studythe interaction between the human and a product in a virtual world,digital humans must have sufficient capabilities to manipulate andgrasp virtual objects. We apply several ideas from the fields ofrobotics, pattern recognition and computer graphics to create a newinteractive grasping system for a digital human called SantosTMthat is being developed at the Virtual Soldier Research Laboratoryat The University of Iowa
