This book provides a detailed description of the theories, tools, and competencies that are required for governance for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The purpose of the unique integrative approach in this book is to address the fragmentation of governance across governance levels, sectors, and interests. Such fragmentation is an important barrier to achieving the SDGs. The main question addressed is: What are the essential elements and the organizing logic of an integrative framework that is suitable for analysing governance for the SDGs from a multi-level, multi-sectoral perspective and for implementing the transitions that we need towards a more sustainable world? This transdisciplinary book approaches this question from three main avenues. First, it proposes that applying a combination of innovative governance theories is needed in order to improve the analysis and practice of sustainability governance. Secondly, it explores the interests of core actors in a number of case examples, and thirdly it offers recommendations for improving the study and practice of sustainability governance. Proper governance for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) should enable us to shift towards more sustainable pathways. The findings presented form the basis for a new approach to sustainability governance: Integrative Sustainability Governance (ISG). The ensuing ISG framework includes indicator frames within the pillars of power, knowledge and norms. The book also concludes that the transformation of crisis into transitions needs to find a place in risk management; that systems deliberation can complement democracy in addressing serious problems; and that insights from behavioral science can play a crucial role in successful transitions towards the SDGs. Whether you are a student, expert, or practitioner with an interest in the SDGs, this handbook will surely be a comprehensive and useful companion.
