This book explores the political economy of India from independence to the 1970s. Examining newly independent India, it investigates the various facets of Nehruvian economy to analyse the factors which led to the growth of Indian industries and business. Pointing to the transformation of capitalists of the colonial era into industrialists in post-independence India, this work argues that in trying to run a amixed economya instead of a Soviet-style planned economy, the Government had to rely on asocial engineeringa to convert the Indian capitalists who were financial wizards rather than industrialists into modern capitalists interested in sustained industrial growth rather than short-term speculative gains. Based on extensive research in government documents, private papers, and newspaper articles, this work reveals the trajectories of development in the first three decades of independent India.
