This volume presents new ways of viewing the birth of Israel in the context of the socio-politics of the Levant in antiquity. Employing critical methodologies from history-writing and anthropology as well as archaeological and ethnographic data, the book sets out to recover a historical rather than a biblical 'Israel'. The book examines how much current biblical scholarship applies socio-scientific models to biblical narratives without adequate examination of non-biblical evidence and also challenges the idea that the biblical writers were recording historical events as we understand this practice today. Throughout, the book aims to challenge the methodologies of contemporary scholarship to find ways of creating a more critical and historical picture of the emergence of Israel in ancient Palestine.
