The essays in this book explore how conceptions of blood - one of the four bodily fluids known as humors in the early modern period - permeate discourses of human difference from 1500 to 1900. It begins with the assumption that the concept of 'race', among the most enduring and controversial signifiers of difference, is continually evolving and that our understanding of the term would benefit from an engagement with this long history. The authors explore how ideas about 'blood' in science and literature have supported, at various points in history, fantasies of human embodiment and human difference that serve to naturalize hierarchies existent for over four hundred years in continental England and Spain and in the Anglo- and Ibero-Americas.
