This book evaluates the changes in food retailingpatterns in the face of open-market trends in amedium sized city (Citlalicalli) in central Mexico. This evaluation is carried out using the model ofretail trade-concentration. The following questionsare addressed: whether trade-concentration hadoccurred in the field-site; if yes, what were thecauses; and, what were the effects of retailconcentration on preexisting food retailers. Thefindings from this fourteen month study revealedthat trade-concentration is proceeding inCitlalicalli and the recent spread of large storesin the region has been encouraged by free-tradepolicies adopted by Mexico since the mid-1980s.Contrary to popular belief, the impact of retailconcentration on preexisting small retailers inCitlalicalli has been minimal. This research showsthat small retailers are not always in directcompetition with modern retailers as the two servedifferent sections of the society. This studyconcludes that appropriate policy measures canensure the coexistence of large and small retailersin developing countries and, thereby, the continuedvitality of city centers.
