Bullying involves demonstrations of the norms of socialgroups, outlawing and punishing those who do not conform. The way aperson appraises bullying strongly influences the coping process, how they react emotionally, and bystander behaviour. This researchexplores the distinction between abuse based on individualcharacteristics and abuse in terms of group membership, such asone's race or sex as a whole. Existing bullying literature tends toappraise group-based bullying as worse, and therefore moredifficult to cope with, because it maligns not only the individualbut also the individual's entire reference group. This assumptionis not grounded in substantial evidence. There has been nosystematic investigation of group-based bullying compared directlywith individual-based bullying. The aim of this study is tounderstand young people's evaluations of the harm from the twodistinguishable bases for being devalued. Contributing to knowledgeabout the complex processes through which young people aresusceptible to and protected from bullying, this book is intendedfor schools, teachers, parents, care workers, anti-bullyingorganisations, bullying researchers and policy-makers.
